OBJECTRUM
2022
Acrylic on wood

OBJECTRUM focuses on tools that have been used by people for generations, and on the traditional forms that have been passed down through time. By examining the sensibilities and thoughts embedded within these forms, the project seeks to reinterpret them as new forms of expression.

Tools are originally objects created to serve practical functions in everyday life. Yet over long periods of time, they have become intertwined with the culture, ways of life, prayers, and aspirations of the people and places where they were used, giving rise to distinctive forms and decorations. These forms embody more than function or beauty; they carry the experiences and memories accumulated by those who made and used them.

In the process of creating the works, I examined traditional tools through their forms, decorations, materials, and traces of use, using these elements as clues to consider the contexts in which they emerged and the meanings that have been attributed to them. Rather than reproducing forms from the past as they were, I sought to understand the cultural backgrounds and human sentiments embedded within them, and to translate them into new forms through my own sensibility.

In particular, I focus on the decorative elements found in tools, as well as on forms that appear excessive or unnecessary from a purely functional perspective. I consider these elements to reveal a human impulse to give objects meanings beyond their practical purpose—expressing prayer, hope, ritual, and other intangible forms of human experience.

By taking inherited forms and cultures as points of departure, OBJECTRUM seeks to encounter the human activities and sentiments that lie behind them, and to reconsider them through the language of contemporary form. The project explores the possibilities that emerge between the acts of inheriting and remaking.
